The Holy Spirit Empowers Us To Pray Effectively – Benny Shobo

  1. 1. He Intercedes in our weakness: The Holy Spirit acts as a helper, assisting in times of exhaustion, confusion, or when words cannot adequately express our needs.

  2. 2. He Aligns with God’s Will for us: The Holy Spirit guides us to pray for the right things with pure motives, shifting our focus from self-reliance to godly desires.
  3. 3. He Builds us Spiritually: The Holy Spirit reminds us of our identity as God’s Children, giving us the confidence to approach God as “Abba, Father”.
  4. 4. He gives us Spiritual Empowerment: Praying in the Holy Spirit (or praying in tongues) allows believers to pray beyond human reasoning, directly guided by divine wisdom.
  5. 5. He Aligns our Desires: The Holy Spirit transforms our hearts and minds so that our prayers move beyond selfish requests into a deeper focus on God’s Kingdom, love, and purposes.
  6. 6. He guides us into Intimacy and Boldness: By pouring God’s love into our hearts, the Holy Spirit prompts us to cry out “Abba, Father,” giving us the confidence and boldness to approach God as His beloved children.
  7. 7. He Guides Our Focus: The Holy Spirit acts as a divine Helper, guarding us from praying with wrong motives and directing our focus to God’s word, promises and supremacy.
  8. 8. He Teaches us Truth: John 14:26: “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you”.

He Empowers Spiritually and Strengthens us: Acts 1:8: ” But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Ephesians 3:16: I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being.”

The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children“.
  11.  11. He Produces Transformation and Comfort us: The Holy Spirit helps change our character to be more like Christ and renews us daily. Galatians 5:22-23: “ But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law”.
  12. 12. He Purifies, Shapes our hearts and characters: Hebrews 9:14, “How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!

5 Main Steps for Us to Pray in the Spirit

  1. 1. We must Admit Your Inabilities: Begin by honestly confessing to God that you don’t know how to pray as you should. This act of yielding moves you from “praying in the flesh” (relying on your own strength) to a reliance on the Spirit’s power.
  2. 2. We must endeavour to Create a Space for Silence: Find a quiet place away from distractions. Use these moments not to speak, but to listen and wait with expectation. Often, God’s voice comes as a “still, small voice” that requires a quiet heart to hear.
  3. 3. We must Call upon the Holy Spirit: Explicitly ask the Holy Spirit to aid you. You might say, “Holy Spirit, help me to connect with God and pray according to His will.”
  4. 4. We should endeavour to Pray Through Scripture and in faith: Read the Bible and declare scriptures especially the Psalms—as a guide. Reading a verse and then praying it back to God helps ensure your requests align with His revealed will.
  5. 5. We must be Alert and Pay Attention to the Promptings of the Holy Spirit: Look for subtle shifts in your heart, such as a sudden burden for a person, a feeling of peace, or “wordless groans” that express what you cannot put into words. It is imperative that we Do Not ignore these impulses; they are often the Holy Spirit’s direct leading.
